What is Solaris?
"Solaris" is Sun Microsystems' version of Unix Operating
System, based on AT&T's System V Unix, with a lot more features
and improvements. It is one of the most popular Unix environments
that is being used by corporates today.
Learning Solaris, as of learning any other flavor of Unix, seems
a daunting task for a beginner, because of its unfriendly and cryptic
commands and not knowing where to look in case some help is needed.
The best way to start learning Solaris (or any Unix or Linux for that matter) is to understand the principles or philosophy behind
its design. Once that is understood, you can see its elegance, power and versatility.
Then understand the basic concepts, commands and tools that gives you the confidence in using Solaris. With this foundation, you can move on to learn intermediate and advanced level commands and concepts.
Our goal in creating this website is to help you get started with
learning Solaris by giving you that initial foundation. We use Solaris 10 to teach you the concepts. Explore and enjoy learning Solaris while you are here, for free!
